The Underrated Television Series
As a somewhat dedicated television viewer, I've found that over the years, my taste in shows have somewhat matured from the easy to laugh at comedies and no-brainer reality shows to smart comedies and thinker dramas.
I talk of such shows as 30 Rock, Arrested Development, Nip/Tuck, Eyes, Boston Legal, The Comeback, Weeds, Dead Like Me and The Sopranos.
The only problem with being a fan of these shows is the time slots given to such programs. These programs usually only last one season before being canned or are screened after 10pm at night, and then usually moved around so much that the next time you find them, it's been three episodes and you've missed a whole chunk from the story line.
*30 Rock, starring Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey is a multi-award winning comedy currently airing at 11.30pm on Monday nights.
*Nip/Tuck, starring Julian McMahon and Dylan Walsh is also a multi-award winning drama currently airing Mondays at 10.30.
*Boston Legal, starring James Spader and William Shatner is a multi-award winning drama, airing 11.00pm on Monday nights.
Then there's the shows that only lasted one season because they never found the required audience to keep them on the air.
*The Comeback starred Lisa Kudrow as Valerie Cherish, a former well loved sit-com actress in the 80's trying to make a comeback.
*Eyes starred Tim Daly and Laura Leighton in a slick and smart private eye drama.
*Dead Like Me starred Ellen Muth and Mandy Patinkis as members of "the un-dead" claiming souls of those who are about to die.
Ever since the powerhouse that was Friends, Will & Grace and Frasier ended, we're seeing more and more non-sitcom-esque shows pop up that are not getting the same fanfare unless that 'thought factor' is not required. A good example would be Samantha Who starring Christina Applegate. It's a comedy thats no filmed in front of a live audience, there's no laugh track and it's simple to watch.
I guess the main reason for this post is not so much to spot-light the shows that deserve more, but to wonder why people aren't paying more attention to these shows. Are the general public just not smart enough to understand these programs and welcome the characters into their living room?
