The race that stops a nation
Its interesting that at no other time in the year would I ever consider putting a bet on the races, but today is the Melbourne Cup. This is the day that the entire nation comes together to watch some horses go around a track. Maybe its more than that though. The significance of this race has probably been elevated by horses such as Phar Lap and other such legends keeping this event in our minds. I wonder if any day soon the greyhounds will reach these heights? Or even lawn bowls? Sometimes I sneer at the rhetoric that it's "the race that stops a nation", and then other times I think, yeah it is. Hmmmm...I wonder if the election results will be the same?

Perhaps I could ask of your good self and your readers to tell me what the point is of the emphasis on fashion and celebrities. I don't see them on course or on the racing TV channels in the middle of winter.
