The intro post mark II plus Spooks and Heroes

Hi, my name is Mickey and I fail miserably at being a blogger and a TV watcher.

Obviously, given the date of the first post, it's taken some time for me to really get into starting this blog. Part of that was to do with motivation, but another part was to do with the Writers Guild of America going on strike last year that saw seasons of most American shows dwindle off around Christmas time, leaving me with very little TV to talk about.

It was a tough few months, but as a TV addict, I found ways through the strike. For a start, I'm not opposed to a good bit of British telly. I started following Doctor Who around the end of 2006 and Torchwood followed pretty quickly afterward. From what I remember from last year, the new season of Torchwood started around the same time as US TV became non-existent so for a couple of months I was occupied with that. Then the Doctor Who season started at Easter which gave me 13 episodes of pure joy to distract me from everything else.

But focus on one or two shows doesn't usually do it for me so I went out in search of something else. I normally follow friend recommendation, so I asked around and found myself watching the first season of another British show, Spooks. I was skeptical, I have three CSIs, Without a Trace and the occasional Law and Order viewing on my rotation, I didn't think I needed another cop/law enforcement show. But after the first episode I was completely hooked. The seventh series started on the 27th of this month and I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the resolution of the season six cliff hanger just a couple of days after it originally aired. By my calculations that means I watched 6 entire series' in about four months. Quick, but I'm sure I would have been quicker had I not been hampered by the way the ABC airs Spooks and the changing release dates for the DVDs. But that's a topic for another day.

The other show I picked up over the strike was Heroes. I lived in America at the time that Heroes first started and I fell into the hype. But something about the first two episodes failed to catch my attention and I came back to Australia, not really caring that I was going to miss out on another good show. By the time they started airing it here, Heroes had a huge following in the US so I decided to give it another chance. This time, I made it through the first three episodes and felt much the same way.

So when the trusted friend who recommended Spooks to me suggested I give Heroes one last try and stick out out to the end of the first season, I was more than skeptical, I was down-right reluctant. But she arranged it so I had copies on my iPod and I forced myself to watch on the bus for a week. A week took me past the first four episodes and into where the show definitely started to get good. So I kept watching. I was done with the first season by the time it aired here in Australia and was all geared up for a brilliant second season. But then the strike started and the episodes were a little average. The third season, which started airing here a couple of weeks ago, seemed promising but at the moment is quickly slipping into WTF? territory. (As in WTF are they doing to my favourite characters? WTF are they doing to the big bads?) I'll continue watching, though and trust that the writers have something big and exciting up their sleeves to keep me interested.

Okay, so the strike for me was about getting disinterested in shows I've been following for years and picking up and catching up on mass amounts of full series' that I'd missed out while obsessing over one genre. In a lot of ways, the strike was good for me because it introduced me to new things I never would have tried. When I started this blog, I thought I was addicted to TV and that I knew a fair bit about a lot of shows. After the strike I realised that to be the sort of addict I want to be I'm going to have to stop giving shows the flick after the pilot (because let's face it, many pilots are average) and I'm going to have to stop dismissing shows that I've never seen.

For anyone who stumbles across this blog, here's how things are now. I'm going to attempt to do a weekly wrap up of things that I've watched. If I feel anything big has happened, I'll blog about that. I'll write some reviews, I'll probably devote a lot of time to talking about what's happening with air dates and "fast tracking" on Australian TV and I'll try some new things. I'm coming into the summer period over here, so if you have recommendations of things that I should take a look at, by all means let me know. Perhaps if you tell me who is in it, why you like it and why you think I should watch. I now promise not to dismiss anything, so let's have at it! This is not limited to shows that are currently running. I was an X-Files fan for a few years but gave up around season five. At the moment, I'm working my way through season 8 and it's fun seeing something like that for the first time!

The following is a list of TV shows that are currently on my rotation:

- Spooks
- Heroes
- Pushing Daisies
- CSI, CSI: NY & CSI: Miami
- Without a Trace
- Doctor Who (Oh no, Tennant!)
- Torchwood
- Ashes to Ashes (just finished watching. Brilliant)
- Gossip Girl
- Fringe
- The X-Files (up to season 8 thus far)

The following is a list of TV shows that I'm thinking about getting into (but I need encouragement or a push along):

- 30 Rock (has been on my DVD shelf for over a year. It's still in the packaging)
- Life on Mars (US version. Y/N?)
- Prisonbreak
- House
- Grey's Anatomy
- Life
- The Office (UK - also on my shelf)
- Weeds (I've watched a couple. The rest are on my shelf)
- Psych (I loved the first three, it got axed in Australia. I just got the DVDs as a gift so this one is a definite!)
- Spooks: Code 9 (I've watched the pilot. Not a huge fan of the dystopian genre but will continue with encouragement)

Right. So that's it for this incredibly long entry.

Happy watching,
Mickey.
