TeeVee: Project Runway (8/20)

YAY! A new season of Project Runway!

As I said before the only thing about new reality TV is that awkward 'getting to know' the contestants part . . . so I'll just highlight the ones that stood out to me for this post! This season Project Runway's in LA and on Lifetime (Cue More Crying!), but it seems like the same old show we love!

First Challenge: Red Carpet with your Point of View
The contestants get $200 dollars to shop the notorious 'Mood' and have to bring an innovative, red carpet ready dress to the catwalk.

TOP THREE:

Christopher, the winner! The self-taught 30 year old from Minnesota won the first challenge, so congrats! Michael Kohr's called it "Edgy and Cute" and Heidi called it "Young" (in a good way). His two tone (black textured and off-white ruffles) strapless cocktail dress was a definite stand out.

Christopher

Ra’mon (2nd Place) (31, from Chicago). His deep purple evening gown for the Academy Awards was stunning and I could see someone like Penelope Cruz or Renee Z. wearing it. The judges called it ‘Safe’, but I think it looked beautiful and had some interesting lines and structure.

Johnny (3rd Place). He's the now sober addict (30, from West Hollywood) that almost melted down and quit before he even started. But after a quick pep talk from Tim Gunn he obviously bounced back with a deep V-neck, extremely low back red frock with black sequenced trim. It was fun and hung well on the model, but the judges thought it would have looked much better in a different color (ala black).

BOTTOM THREE:

Ari, the Auf'd (26, from Kansas City –tends to design futuristic clothes with alternative uses). Let's go over some of the critiques. Tim Gunn thought it would look like a 'Halter Diaper'. I believe Michael Kohrs called it a 'Disco Soccer Ball'. Ari was definitely an 'Out of the Box' designer, one that doesn't even sketch (the horror!), but as LiLo put it, it's fine to be crazy and wild BUT you have to be able to sell it to someone.

Ari

Mitchell, the one who I think should have been Auf'd (26, from Savannah, has been more involved in the marketing aspect of design recently). He was planning to smock a whole dress, but when his model's measurements were allegedly 'off', he had to scrap his idea and his panty-hose like fabric all he could come up with was a sheer, turtle-necked 'nightgown'.

Qristyl (42 from NYC), she showed off her portfolio full of ‘Plus-Sexy’ clothes, but after tonight’s mash of a bright purple fabric and a colorful print evening gown for the likes of Miley Cyrus or Lindsey Lohan to wear to the Emmy Awards (what!?), she strikes me as a Mom that’s trying desperately to be the cool one, but is extremely out-of-touch with reality. Her only saving grace this week was that the back of her dress was nice and that Ari and Mitchell did WAY worse.

My favorite of the night:

Irina’s dress (27 from NYC). It was a plunging v-neck lace bodice, with flow-y front slit gown in the color of champagne with a black ribbon belt. The close-up of the lace/crochet bodice is beautiful and the overall look is very elegant and classy.
