Project Runway, Unleashed
We catch up with the designers this week settling in after Episode 1. Heidi hints, then Tim Gunn explains this week's challenge: Head to a local NYC pet shop, armed with $300 and make it work. Tim also warns that the judges will not be pleased with fabric-like conventional items, so designers beware.
The Work Room – Again, there wasn't too much drama in the work room this week, although there were tons of "wee-wee pads" and hot glue… The stuff that stood out to me was Laura's dog-cone skirt debacle (luckily she decided to trash the too short mess) and the fact that Bert was taking his Immunity as a clear chance to slack off this week. (He's lucky it's still early in the competition, because if he does that later in the game, he might not get an easy pass).
So let's get straight to the Runway right?
Here's the Judge's TOP 3:
Oliver – WINNER! He made a capped sleeve dress from a off-white textured dog-bed (top) and an ombre effect skirt made from hamster & rabbit bedding and belted it with clear plastic. The judges loved the sophistication of this look overall. Nina & Michael Kohrs particularly loved it, and they overruled Heidi to give it the win. (Heidi thought the fit wasn't quite right, and she liked the next designer's better…) He wouldn't have been my top choice; I don't think he'd have even made my Top 3. I think Nina & Michael have been fawning over him since the mini-casting session, and hope that doesn't coast him into Bryant Park. I want to see more than off-white and clear pieces from him.
Anthony Ryan – He made high-necked mini-dress made with bird seed. The judges loved the look; particularly that it looked like well-done bead work (especially the neck) and thought his simple belt was the perfect addition. The reason he didn't win? Nina thought it was just too short. This was by far my favorite look of the night. I loved the detail he went into with the sunflower seeds at the neck and thought it was a great idea.
Joshua M – He made the colorful midriff showing top from aquarium beads and a black circle skirt from reptile caging. The judges' loved his garment, but he lost points on the over-the-top styling which included too much make-up, a mirror dangling from her waist and dog toys on her shoes. I absolutely loved the top; the colors, pattern and shape were all great.
Fallene – My favorite from last week, dropped to the bottom of the judges after struggling with everyone telling her this was her challenge to win. She made a lackluster tube top dress. The brown of the top paired with the glued on fish décor didn't wow the judges. I don't think it was the most horrible, but I see why she was in the bottom.
Bryce – Oh, the "wee-wee" napkin skirt paired with a blue textured halter top. The judges hated everything about it. They hated the monochromatic blue, the fit of the top, the skirt itself, and the styling. He's very lucky they hated someone else's more.
Joshua C – AUF'D - It's his second time in the bottom, and what he was hoping to pass as safe, got him into trouble. He used an umbrella and a dog bed to make his garment, but the judges deemed the materials too conventional. Plus they thought the silhouette was dated (Someone called it 90's bar wear), and thus he was eliminated.
Viktor – He would have made my Top 3 over Oliver. I thought his lavender strapless mini-dress made from the "wee-wee" pads looked like a wearable, beautiful dress.
Danielle – I'm not sure what her pet-store items were, but I liked her top with net-overlay paired with dyed skirt. However, it's very similar to her silhouette last week (sweater, tucked into shorts) which has me worried.
Cecilia – She made a cute V-neck dress from hamster bedding (mix of tan & blue). I thought it was a little less successful compared to Anthony Ryan's and Oliver's looks, but I did like the U-shaped back with cross straps.
Kimberly – she made a blue braided sculpted top over a black skirt. I think her and Anya basically had the same idea in this challenge. If I had to pick between the two, I'd say hers was slightly more unique and better executed.
Anya – She made a colorful halter top from rope collars/toys and a skinny, high-waisted skirt that incorporated black collars. I loved the top, although it was very similar in shape to her last week halter. The skirt was okay, and at least she was able to finish it.
Laura – She scraped her ass-baring cone-skirt for a much more chic cardboard skirt paired with a mess of black dog leashes for the top. I thought the new skirt was a big improvement over the cone, but the top still left me wanting more.
Julie – she was down on herself over last week and it seeped into this challenge, as she second guessed herself all the way through. She made a wrap dress made from dog bags. I wish she did more that looked like the back, with the horizontal piece, but it was okay in my book.
Becky – she went a bit crazy with the glue gun, as well as color and texture. She used purple feathers and a mix of green, yellow and orange aquarium décor for her strapless dress. I thought it was a bit bulky, but at least it made a statement.
Bert – His simple black bag dress (dog bed) with overlaying mesh and pink lining was a total bore. He knew it. The judges knew it. And it was swept under the rug. I wonder if he'll actually work next week…
