G.I.Joe: The Rise of Cobra
I'm not a NORMAL movie critic. You know the one's that expect every movie to be Oscar-Worthy, blah, I'm actually the opposite of that, if I watch an Oscar-Worthy movie it's a RARITY. BUT if you want to know what a NORMAL movie buff thinks of a movie here it is . . .
What it's about: G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is a 2009, American live-action film adaptation of the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero toy franchise. The film is directed by Stephen Sommers, produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and co-written by Stuart Beattie, based on a 1998 screenplay by John Paul Kay. G.I. Joe features an ensemble cast based on the various characters of the franchise. The story follows two American soldiers, Duke and Ripcord, who join the G.I. Joe Team after being attacked by Cobra troops. (Thanks Wiki!)
The Plot: A weapons expert James McCullen (Christopher Eccleston) has created a nanotechnology-based weapon capable of destroying an entire city. His company MARS sells four warheads to NATO, and the U.S. Army is tasked with delivering the warheads. Duke (Channing Tatum) and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans) are delivering the warheads when they are ambushed by the Baroness (Sienna Miller), whom Duke recognizes to be his ex-fiancee Ana Lewis. Duke and Ripcord are rescued by Scarlett (Rachel Nichols), Snake Eyes (Ray Park) and Heavy Duty (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje). They take the warheads to The Pit, G.I. Joe's command center in North Africa, and upon arriving rendezvous with the head of the G.I. Joe team, General Hawk (Dennis Quaid). Hawk takes command of the warheads and excuses Duke and Ripcord, only to be convinced to let them join his group after Duke reveals that he knows the Baroness. (Thanks Wiki!) Once the Baroness and her crew swipe the warheads and plan to use it to strike fear into the world, it's up to the G.I. Joes to stop it.
My Thoughts: You have to come into this movie knowing what it is. It's a real-like adaptation of a 80's cartoon. If you're looking for complex dialogue this is not the movie for you. But if you like a action-packed, explosive-loaded, decent-storyline and some eye candy, then you'll be very pleased.
How it rates against the other cartoon-turned-blockbuster-ac tion movie (Transformers 2) here's how it breaks down:
1. Action/Explosions: About the same. Best scenes --> for GIJOE would be the Foot-Chase scene in the Acceleration Suits and the destruction of Paris scene.
2. Story-line: Far better! Transformers 2 really lacked a story-line, which made the movie seem long and tedious to me. However, GIJOE had a story-line that it stuck to, had a good twist I didn't see coming, and had an open ending...
3. Eye Candy: Opinions may vary, BUT I say BETTER. Some may argue having Megan Fox is the only eye candy a movie needs, I however disagree. Although she is very hot, where's the love for the ladies? I'm sorry Shia, you just ain't cutting it. In this movie you have the very sexy Sienna Miller in a black latex suit as well as redhead Rachel Nichols for the guys to drool over AND you have Channing Tatum and his glorious 'I have to have at least one scene with my shirt off in every movie I'm in' muscles and surprisingly Marlon Wayans rock hard stomach and charming spunk to pant over.
SO . . . If you're in a mood for a Good Action Flick, go see G.I. Joe . . . You won't be disappointed. I give it 3 1/2 out of 5 Stars.
