PUSH
Push is a 2009 American science fiction thriller film directed by Paul McGuigan. The film stars Chris Evans, Dakota Fanning, Djimon Hounsou, and Camilla Belle. The plot centers on a group of people born with various power who band together to attempt to take down a government agency that is using a dangerous drug to enhance their powers in hopes of creating an army of super soldiers.(Thanks Wiki!)
My thoughts: I had low expectations for this movie. I remember that this didn't quite get the buzz most super-hero-esque movies seem to get when it first came to the big screen AND the fact that it starred creepy Dakota Fanning had me shying away from it then. BUT with slim pickings at my local Hollywood Video store, I grabbed it and it was better than I expected it to be. I think it had a decent storyline, good pacing and the main characters were relatable, despite their super-power.
First downside, if you like the TV series Heroes and all the different superpowers the characters in it have, this movie suggests that there are only about 5 different powers, and they're a lot less exciting.
An upside, Dakota Fanning. I have found her slightly creepy in other movies, but I actually liked her in this. She plays a "Watcher" someone who can see the future and is trying to save her mother (a very powerful watcher) from the evil government agency called 'The Division'. I think she plays the role with a lot of teenage angst that is somehow endearing.
Another downside, the bad guy. The Division's Henry Carver (Djimon Hounsou), isn't that scary to me. He has his moments, but as an overall nemesis he was pretty weak.
Another upside, the Asian bad guys. Now, I'm not sure why they wanted what the Division wanted, but alas. They showcased another ability "Screamers" where they scream and blow your mind, literally. They were funny to watch.
Overall I'd give this 3 out of 5 stars.
