Leadership Malfunction

CBS and the FCC are still in court over the "wardrobe malfunction" incident. Attorneys for Janet Jackson's nipple still maintain that it was an accidental exposure. The aureole's lawyers are attempting to settle out of court.

The least silly thing about this whole business is how it shows our government plodding ahead at speeds that make continental drift look hypersonic by comparison. Okay, so CBS goofed- they hired someone who's most famous for taking her clothes off in Playboy to do a singing gig; it stood to reason that her voice wouldn't be the highlight of the performance.

So now the FCC is trying to collect something on the order of half a million dollars from CBS, but after all this time they must have gone far beyond that in attorney's fees. The "We've got to protect the kiddies!" line is a bit thin: The incident only lasted a very few frames; you couldn't see it clearly until you got into the Net to see the screen caps. Once you're on the Net, though, you have access to such a vast and diverse library of the kinkiest, hardest-core porn that it makes Jackson look like a nun- except for the stereotype of nuns having musical talent.

When the pond scum running for congress tell blatant, over-the-top lies about their opponents the FCC is nowhere to be found. Our "protection" from fraudulent advertising doesn't apply to the two businesses that do the vast majority of it, the Republicans and Democrats. Towards the end of a movie the commercials are piled on like cheese on a deep-pot pizza- nothing for the FCC to bother about. The local "news" is mostly hype for other shows and fifteen minutes of sports- no problemo. Three frames of a nipple obscured by some bizarre jewelry piece- MY GOD!! GO TO DEFCON THREE IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!!

Congress has never been known for letting the various Federal agencies out-do them in sheer stupidity, and they didn't take this lying down. Between raising their own pay and fighting terrorism by changing the names of menu items they managed to raise the fines for "indecency" by a factor of ten... though, oddly enough, the fines for fraudulent advertising and other things we actually need protection from remained the same.

I can see the average congressvermin's point, though, since they don't wear hats inside. They can't actually do anything of substance without offending the money people who's backsides congress is bussing to get them to finance their re-election bids in 2008. In the absence of any real accomplishment they try to present the illusion that they're actually Doing Their Job by getting all enraged (on our behalf, of course) over meaningless blather like Nipplegate. The idea is that this is supposed to distract us from their complete and treasonous inaction on anything that truly matters... and, sadly, it seems to work.
