Gossip Girl 2.17 - Carnal Knowledge

Anyone who has read this blog on a regular basis since I took over will know that I'm a bit of a Gossip Girl geek. I've just managed to catch up on last weeks episode and boy, was it a good one. What I keep watching for is the bitchiness. Sure, the clothes are great, everyone looks fantastic and I love that it's shot in New York, but it's the bitchiness more than anything, that keeps me watching.

Inside, I'd like to be a bitch the way Blair is, but more than the fact that I don't have nearly enough money to just say and do whatever I want to whomever I want, I don't have the guts to do it. But Blair, she has enough to fall back on to warrant the self-serving, petty backstabbing that she perpetuates and in this episode, she does not disappoint. People have told me all week this week that Serena and Blair pushed it a bit too far, and I suppose if it was real life, they did a bit, but this is Gossip Girl, this is why I watch and surely why a lot of other people watch. I felt as though the show had come back a bit from the sort of bland story lines from the start of the season.

So what's been happening? Well the cute young English teacher, Rachel is making friends and enemies wherever she goes. Serena likes her, Dan likes her a lot and Blair and her cronies loathe her. In episode 216 Blair declared war on Rachel after the teacher reported her opera stunt to the Constance Head Mistress. In the beginning, getting her girls to support her war is difficult, but they're pushed over the edge when Rachel helps institute a new policy at the school: no cell phones will be allowed in the building. Both the Constance girls and the St Jude's boys will have to check in their phones before they go in to classes. It's all the girls need to support Blair's war on the new teacher.

As wars go, this one gets a little nasty. When Blair is unable to find any dirt on the squeaky clean young teacher, Blair moves to fabricating rumours to get her way. So it was a rumour everyone could see coming from a mile away (I mean really, the teacher was cute and young and teaches English. Of course Dan is going to get a crush on her), but things don't completely go down the predictable road from there. I'm not going to completely spoil the episode, but let me just say the war gets a whole lot more nasty as it progresses and involves more and more key GG players. And then, it ends on a cliffhanger. Fantastic. I can't wait until next week!!
