Glee "Original Song" Recap

Glee (Tuesdays at 8PM on FOX)

This was the first time ORIGINAL SONGS outweighed the cover songs on Glee. It was also the big REGIONALS competition. But let's cover the story-lines first...

1. Quinn wants to be prom queen. She's back with Finn, and although part of it is because he's her "first love", it seems to be mostly about being prom queen.

“Prom queens live on average 5 years longer then regular people because they smile a lot, and smiling has been proven to ward off diseases.”

She thinks Finn popularity status after the big football game win will win over some swing votes. But she's got to keep him away from Rachel. She takes the "keep your friends close, enemies closer" approach by supporting Rachel's original song idea for Regionals after they got served a letter "from" My Chemical Romance saying they couldn't use their song. While pairing up to write a song (turned out it was forged by Sue), Quinn tells her that she doesn't belong with Finn because she's a star that is going to leave town and that her and Finn are destined to stay in town and start a family... Quinn brings up coming out as a couple to Finn in order to start their prom king/queen campaign, but he pushes it off until after Regionals.

2. Rachel struggles. She brings Finn in for a second round of song writing.

“The only Berry on my family treeeeeeeeeeeeeee.”

This was much better than her last, but still not very good. Finn tells here to get past the "easy pain". After her session with Quinn, Rachel finds herself in her writing and performs a solo at Regionals. It seems to have struck a cord with Finn, we'll see where it ends up.

3. Kurt & Blaine finally kiss. Kurt finally speaks up about how Blaine gets all the solos and how that's not going to cut it at Regionals. After Pavoratti (the canary) died, Kurt sang "Blackbird" for the Wablers and Blaine took notice. He convinced the rest of the guys to add a duet to Regionals and spearheaded the vote for Kurt as his partner. When Kurt asked why later, Blaine told him that he "moved him" and the two shared a sweet, yet passionate kiss. It was adorable.

“Kurt, there’s a moment when you say to yourself, ‘Oh, there you are. I’ve been looking for you forever.’”

Kurt had some stage fright before the Regionals competition, and their duet of "Candles" was my least favorite of the night, but it was a great move forward with this particular story-line.

4. Minor Players still get some screen time. Mercedes gets to belt out my favorite number of the night "Hell to the No", Puck gets to sing to his lady-love Lauren with "Big Ass Heart", Santana is still hurt by Brittany's rejection and puts up walls by singing "Trouty Mouth" about Sam.

“All I know is that you blew me off with stubbles McCripple pants.”

5. REGIONALS

Sue and Aural Intensity thought they had it wrapped up with "Jesus is My Friend" because of a nun and a former tea-party candidate on the judges panel, but Sue is better suited for cheerleaders I think.

“Consider this the opening salvo of World War Sue.”

The Warblers started with the "Candles" duet with Blaine and Kurt and followed it up with a cover of Pink's "Raise My Glass" with Blaine as the lead.

Then, New Directions starts out with an original power ballad, "Get it Right" by Rachel (mostly alone), followed by a totally fun original "anthem" song, "Losers Like Me".

With Kathy Griffin poking fun at Sarah Palin during her guest spot as a "twitterer and former tea-party candidate", Loretta Divine guest spotting as a newly minted nun (and former stripper) and Rod Remington back in play.

“Can I add a dash of Rod to this lady soup?”

Kathy's character was all for Aural Intensity's "Jesus song", with Loretta's character thought was too pandering, she liked the Warblers, but in the end they chose correctly...

NEW DIRECTIONS WIN REGIONALS!

Then Mr. Shue gives out an MVP award that the group voted for... and that was RACHEL...

THE PERFORMANCES
“Misery” - The Warblers, led by Blaine. Am I the only one getting sick of the Warblers? I love the song though, and it was a good opening to the show.

“Blackbird” - Kurt - did it justice and I liked the a cappella feel.

“Trouty Mouth” - Santana (about Sam) - Best song title of the night fo sho, but it was kind of weird. Although I may decide it's fun enough to be a ringtone...

“Big Ass Heart” - Puck (to Lauren) - Not sure about this one, I guess I don't like fat jokes that pretend their not fat jokes.

“Hell to the No” - Mercedes - I thought this was the most catchy of all the originals and the most fun.

"Jesus is My Friend” - Aural Intensity (Regionals) - LAME (but it was suppose to be)

“Candles” - The Warblers (Kurt & Blaine Duet) (Regionals) - The vocals seemed off to me, and the duet didn't work as well as I wanted (as if Kurt was too high/flat).

“Raise Your Glass” - The Warblers (Blaine lead) (Regionals)- Totally fun.

“Get it Right” - Rachel (at Regionals) - Liked it a lot although I thought it was missing a hook.

“Loser Like Me” - New Directions (at Regionals) - the perfect anthem for them and one I'm sure the Gleeks will Gleek-out over.

Glee, Comebacks Recap

Glee (Tuesdays at 8PM on FOX)

Last night's Glee wasn't one of my favorites but it may be because I'm immune to Bieber-fever and a "Sue-icidal" Sue. The songs featured last night, just weren't my cup of tea, but let's recap...

As I said, Sue was feeling "Sue-icidal" after the Cheerios didn't win a bid to Nationals and Emma and Will went to see if she was okay... eventually Emma came up with the idea to have Sue join Glee Club for a week, because music makes you feel better.

Quinn is losing interest in Sam, I mean, he wanted to go coaster painting on Friday night, and convinced him she got mono from saving Finn's life via CPR/tongue excavation of a jaw-breaker lodged in his throat... So what does Sam do?

He brushes his hair forward, dons a purple hoodie and starts singing Justin Bieber tunes in his one-man band The Justin Bieber Experience. It worked at a Bat Mitzvah when singing a few lycs of "Baby", so he took it to Glee Club. More on that in a second.

Meanwhile, Mr. Schue tells New Directions and Sue that Regionals has a theme this year, and it's "an anthem" which Brittany defines as "the bottom of an ant's pants" and sends them off on their assignment. Sue takes this opportunity to try and pit Mercedes and Rachel against each other. But back to them later...

Sam performs a Justin Bieber tune (more of "Baby") for Glee Club, and as the guys seem unimpressed the girls work themselves into a swoon-fest. Afterwards, Artie, Mike, and Puck ask Sam to expand his Bieber-one-man-band into a group to help them get out of the post-Valentine's day slumps. Finn is the only one not into the whole thing, as he secretly taunts Quinn's lack of interest in Sam's face. They totally sing, like, another, like, Bieber tune ("Somebody to Love" with a bunch of clalk clapping, which must be a homeage to the original video...)

Glee Comebacks Episode 13 Justin Beiber

Meanwhile, Rachel had paid Brittany to help her "make a comeback" by making her a fashion icon at the school. However, the plan totally backfires when Brittany wears leg-warmers on her arms and makes carosuel sweaters and plaid skirts (aka sexy schoolgirl librarian chic) trendy. Although I totally loved that Brittany is a style icon at McKinnley, this story-line fell super flat.

Something that didn't fall flat was the Puck and Lauren romance. Puck helps Lauren do her first solo in Glee Club by telling her to picture everyone vulnerable in their underwear while she performs and she teases him mercilessly while performing the only song I really liked from last night, "I Know What Boys Like".

Mr. Schue brings Sue to a children's hospital (P.S. it was filmed with real patients!) and "This Little Light of Mine" and Sue melts into a smiling, humane person for a few minutes.

Back at school, Santana propositions Sam about being able to touch her "twins" and tells him Quinn lied about the choking story. He takes it to heart and breaks up with her, even though she seemingly chose him over Finn this week.

Mercedes and Rachel start their Diva-Off as rivals, but end with smiles much to the dismay of Sue. Oh, by the way, they sang Rent's "Take Me or Leave Me".

Sue, after her heart-warming trip to the hospital, rightfully claims that no one has actually sang "an anthem" yet, but has the perfect solution... My Chemical Romance's "Sing"... but what was with all the plaid shirts? Mr. Schue and the rest of New Directions think it's the perfect song for Regionals, except for Rachel who thinks an orignal song will give them a leg up over the competition. No one agrees when it was put to a vote, but later Finn tells her it's a good idea, but that he thinks she should write it and perform it for them in order to change their minds. I'm kind of really excited to see what they come up with for this... an original song on Glee... awesome.

At the end of the episode, Sue burst Will's bubble by telling him she's got her groove back... she's now the director of rival glee club Oral Intensity... see you at Regionals sucka.

Next week's episode looks super funny when alcohol and parties seem to take over everyone. Rachel and Blaine kiss, Brittany strips and Bieste and Schue look chummy...

TeeVee: Glee, Silly Little Love Songs (S2Ep12)

Glee (Tuesdays @ 8PM on FOX)

We got 2 episodes just a few days apart. Oh Glee, how I missed you all of January. This Valentine's themed episode went back to the roots of story-telling coupled with songs that make sense in that story-telling, which happens to be my favorite kind of Glee episodes. With that being said, you also have to enter the "Glee-reality" because certain things can't/wouldn't actually happen in real-reality.
