Glee "Original Song" Recap
Glee (Tuesdays at 8PM on FOX)
This was the first time ORIGINAL SONGS outweighed the cover songs on Glee. It was also the big REGIONALS competition. But let's cover the story-lines first...
1. Quinn wants to be prom queen. She's back with Finn, and although part of it is because he's her "first love", it seems to be mostly about being prom queen.
“Prom queens live on average 5 years longer then regular people because they smile a lot, and smiling has been proven to ward off diseases.”
2. Rachel struggles. She brings Finn in for a second round of song writing.
“The only Berry on my family treeeeeeeeeeeeeee.”
This was much better than her last, but still not very good. Finn tells here to get past the "easy pain". After her session with Quinn, Rachel finds herself in her writing and performs a solo at Regionals. It seems to have struck a cord with Finn, we'll see where it ends up.
3. Kurt & Blaine finally kiss. Kurt finally speaks up about how Blaine gets all the solos and how that's not going to cut it at Regionals. After Pavoratti (the canary) died, Kurt sang "Blackbird" for the Wablers and Blaine took notice. He convinced the rest of the guys to add a duet to Regionals and spearheaded the vote for Kurt as his partner. When Kurt asked why later, Blaine told him that he "moved him" and the two shared a sweet, yet passionate kiss. It was adorable.
“Kurt, there’s a moment when you say to yourself, ‘Oh, there you are. I’ve been looking for you forever.’”
Kurt had some stage fright before the Regionals competition, and their duet of "Candles" was my least favorite of the night, but it was a great move forward with this particular story-line.
4. Minor Players still get some screen time. Mercedes gets to belt out my favorite number of the night "Hell to the No", Puck gets to sing to his lady-love Lauren with "Big Ass Heart", Santana is still hurt by Brittany's rejection and puts up walls by singing "Trouty Mouth" about Sam.
“All I know is that you blew me off with stubbles McCripple pants.”
5. REGIONALS
Sue and Aural Intensity thought they had it wrapped up with "Jesus is My Friend" because of a nun and a former tea-party candidate on the judges panel, but Sue is better suited for cheerleaders I think.
“Consider this the opening salvo of World War Sue.”
The Warblers started with the "Candles" duet with Blaine and Kurt and followed it up with a cover of Pink's "Raise My Glass" with Blaine as the lead.
Then, New Directions starts out with an original power ballad, "Get it Right" by Rachel (mostly alone), followed by a totally fun original "anthem" song, "Losers Like Me".
With Kathy Griffin poking fun at Sarah Palin during her guest spot as a "twitterer and former tea-party candidate", Loretta Divine guest spotting as a newly minted nun (and former stripper) and Rod Remington back in play.
“Can I add a dash of Rod to this lady soup?”
Kathy's character was all for Aural Intensity's "Jesus song", with Loretta's character thought was too pandering, she liked the Warblers, but in the end they chose correctly...
NEW DIRECTIONS WIN REGIONALS!
Then Mr. Shue gives out an MVP award that the group voted for... and that was RACHEL...
THE PERFORMANCES
“Misery” - The Warblers, led by Blaine. Am I the only one getting sick of the Warblers? I love the song though, and it was a good opening to the show.
“Blackbird” - Kurt - did it justice and I liked the a cappella feel.
“Trouty Mouth” - Santana (about Sam) - Best song title of the night fo sho, but it was kind of weird. Although I may decide it's fun enough to be a ringtone...
“Big Ass Heart” - Puck (to Lauren) - Not sure about this one, I guess I don't like fat jokes that pretend their not fat jokes.
“Hell to the No” - Mercedes - I thought this was the most catchy of all the originals and the most fun.
"Jesus is My Friend” - Aural Intensity (Regionals) - LAME (but it was suppose to be)
“Candles” - The Warblers (Kurt & Blaine Duet) (Regionals) - The vocals seemed off to me, and the duet didn't work as well as I wanted (as if Kurt was too high/flat).
“Raise Your Glass” - The Warblers (Blaine lead) (Regionals)- Totally fun.
“Get it Right” - Rachel (at Regionals) - Liked it a lot although I thought it was missing a hook.
“Loser Like Me” - New Directions (at Regionals) - the perfect anthem for them and one I'm sure the Gleeks will Gleek-out over.
