Cashmere Mafia - Pilot Episode
Being a huge fan of Darren Stars previous jaunts, "Melrose Place" and "Sex and the City", I was chomping at the bit to see Stars new television venture, The hugely anticipated Cashmere Mafia starring Lucy Liu, Miranda Otto, Bonnie Sommerville and Frances O'Connor.
Cashmere Mafia which premiered tonight lacks what it's predecessor (Sex and the City) had...a likable cast. Where SATC's Carrie Bradshaw and the girls were enchanting and bewitching from the onset, Cashmere's femme fatales are badly dressed wannabes who find any excuse to get together for a booze up and gossip session.
There is one exception though, that being Summerville's sexually confused Caitlin Dowd who possesses a quirky cuteness that could easily see her becoming the shows main focus ala Carrie Bradshaw. Though Summerville may be the warmth of the cast, the other three female leads bring the ice. Lucy Liu's Mia Mason tries to be a sassy and high powered career woman, but instead comes off cold and off-putting. Miranda Otto's Juliet Draper is bitchy and conniving instead of being strong and successful and Frances O'Connor's Zoe Burden is...well I don't really know. Her's is the least interesting character of the four.
I did read one interview in today's Herald Sun with actress Miranda Otto, who wanted to make it clear that Sex and the City, Cashmere Mafia is not. Though it's hard to not want to see the similarities. Both shows created by Darren Star. Both feature four females in the lead. Both set in New York. Both see story lines revolving around infidelity, high profile jobs and sex. How can we, the viewer not be expected to wish for a SATC type show.
I can see, over time, the possibility of finding a weekly comfort in Cashmere Mafia. I could see myself using it as my Sex and the City replacement, watching each week hoping to see a flicker of Darren Stars genius that was. Don't forget, this was only the pilot episode!
