Academy Awards Fashion Police
The 2011 Academy Awards were last night, but who cares who won what, right? Let's talk about what's really important... RED CARPET FASHION. (all photo credits belong to GETTY)
LADIES IN RED
LOVE – Presenter Jennifer Hudson in a tangerine halter gown by Atelier Versace paired with 165 carats of Neil Lane diamonds. Jennifer has really been hitting her stride lately in the fashion department, and this dress was one of my favorites from last night. The color pops off her skin, the neckline is sexy, the waistline is to die for and the skirt is all the right kinds of dramatic.
LOVE – Presenter Sandra Bullock in a strapless, scarlet Vera Wang gown with matching crimson clutch and Harry Winston earrings and bangle. I love the bustier bodice and twisting mermaid skirt; it fits her like a dream. Stunning!
LOVE – Nominee Jennifer Lawrence in a minimalistic red hot Calvin Klein Collection gown paired with Chopard earrings and bangle, Jimmy Choo sandals and bomb-shell waves. She looks absolutely gorgeous and Hollywood-ready in this.
LIKE – Penelope Cruz in a plunging neckline, red gown with sequined flame accents by L’Wren paired with Jimmy Choo platforms and Chopard jewels. She walked the red carpet just weeks after having a baby to support husband and Best Actor nominee Javier Bardem (pictured) and I think she looks amazing.
PRETTY PURPLE BEAUTIES
LOVE – Presenter Mila Kunis in a lavender lace Elie Saab Haute Couture gown with grosgrain ribbon waist and peek-a-boo detailing paired with Neil Lane diamonds. I love her style and she surprised me with this dress. I think the lace is stunning and so is the criss-cross and draping of the chiffon. It’s beautiful and elegant.
LIKE – Winner Natalie Portman in an off-the-shoulder, empire-waisted violet Rodarte gown with Swarovski crystal beading, Jimmy Chool heels, a Roger Vivier clutch and Tiffany & Co. jewelry. I love this color on her and I think she picked a silhouette that would be comfortable, but still show off her growing baby bumb.
LIKE – Nominee Amy Adams in a cap-sleeved glittering indigo L’Wren Scott gown paired with over $1 million dollards of Cartier diamond and emerald jewelry. I love the color on her and the silhouette is very slimming. But although I think the jewelry is just amazing, I’m not sure if it was the best paired with this dress.
LIKE – Presenter Cate Blanchett in a elaborately beaded and pleated lilac Givenchy Haute Couture gown with surprising neon yellow beaded accents paired with Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry and a chic bob. Some thought this was too “out-there” but I really like the bodice, the beading, the color combination and the flowiness of this dress. The only thing I’d change is the straight sleeves (if it was a halter… LOVE…)
HATE – Presenter Scarlett Johansson purple-burgundy lace, backless Dolce & Gabbana column gown paired with a choppy bob and Anna Hu Haute Joaillerie ruby, emerald and diamond dragon motif jewels. I love her hair and make-up and the back of this dress, but I think the color doesn’t pop, the neckline is all wrong and the lace was just blah.
SILVER & GOLD
LOVE – Performer Celine Dion in an ivory (and platinum) long-sleeved plunging neckline Giorgio Armani Prive column gown with eye-catching Bulgari diamond and emerald pendant necklace and 40s-siren waves. She looks amazing for just having twins a few months ago and this shows it off. Her hair is gorgeous and I love the large pendant necklace. It was one of my favorites of the night.
LOVE – Performer Gwyneth Paltrow in a fluid metallic Calvin Klein Collection column gown, Brian Atwood pumps, stick-straight hair and Louis Vuitton high jewelry earrings, ring and brooch. I love the unique neckline of this dress and the simplicity of the silhouette. It looks futuristic yet approachable, and like a second skin for the actress/singer.
LIKE – Presenter Helen Mirren in an elegant silk gray gown by Vivienne Westwood with puff-sleeve detail, subtle ruching and stand-out diamond jewels. She looks like Hollywood royalty to me. Bravo.
LIKE – Presenter Hilary Swank in a strapless silver sequined Gucci Premiere gown with ombre feathered train, metallic Roger Vivier clutch and Anna Hu jewelry (including diamond brooches in her sleek up-do). She’s definitely on trend with the metallic and the feathers, but I think it wasn’t fitted as well as it could have been (looks weighed down at the neckline) and I wish she did more with make-up and hair to match the dress.
HATE – Winner Melissa Leo in a custom-made high collar, short-sleeved white lace over gold front-slit dress by Marc Bouwer with yellow-gold jewelry and matching heels. I didn’t hate this as much as some others (I think the white and gold combination looks lovely on her), but the white doily-esque fabric leaves much to be desired.
HATE – Nominee Nicole Kidman in a white strapless Dior Haute Couture gown with silver and gold embellishment paired with 150-carat diamond Fred Leighton choker and bright red Pierre Hardy pumps. I think the embellishment adds little to the dress, and I hate the hips to slit skirt that doesn’t flatter her body.
HATE – Nominee Annette Bening in a gun-metal short-sleeved gown with crystal-beading gown by Naeem Khan paired with emerald drop earrings. For me, the beading detail didn’t hit her body correctly, thus made her look wider than she actually is.
IN BLACK
LOVE – Camila Alves in a dramatic black Kaufman Franco ball-gown paired with Staurat Weitzman shoes. I love the plunging neckline paired with such a large skirt and I think her drop earrings and simple up-do were a perfect match to hubby Matthew’s Dolce & Gabbana tux.
LIKE – Presenter Marisa Tomei in a vintage (1950) Charles James dress from Lily et Cie black (or midnight blue) satin bodice and asymmetrical voluminous skirt. I actually really liked it. I thought it was different, and love that she brought back a retro gown. Plus I dig her modern take on retro hair and make-up.
LIKE – Presenter Reese Witherspoon in a strapless black and white Giorgio Armani Prive gown accented with a 60s voluminous retro ponytail and $1 million worth of Neil Lane diamond and emerald jewelry. She usually wows me at these big red carpet events, so this time I was pretty disappointed.
HATE – Sharon Stone in an one-shoulder black Christian Dior gown with feather details and paired with a very high up-do and severe make-up. I think she went over-board with this look. I think the dress is too young for her and the make-up/hair far to severe. The combination just doesn’t work for me.
HATE – Nominee Helena Bonham Carter in a black Colleen Atwood draped gown with velvet bustier, ribbon sleeves at the shoulders, a curly up-do and a “cheeky” union jack garter belt. I actually think the dress is quite unique, but where she looses me is her hair and make-up… It’s the same every time, and not the most flattering.
SPARKLING NUDES
LOVE – Nominee Hailee Steinfeld in a nude tea-length princess gown with crystal embroidery, custom-made by Marchesa paired with an updo with a headband and Fred Leighton jewelry. I don’t usually like tea-length gowns, but I think it’s the perfect length, the perfect color and perfectly accessorized for the teenage starlet.
LIKE – Presenter Halle Berry in a strapless nude crystal-encrusted Marchesa gown with ruffled train and 10-carat diamond earrings by Neil Lane. She has an amazing figure and this dress definitely shows it off. I love the choice to go with simple statement earrings, and let the ruffled train really be the stand-out.
LIKE – Performer Mandy Moore in an off-the-shoulder sparking nude Monique Lhuillier mermaid gown paired with Chopard yellow-gold and pave diamond button errings and 13-carat ring and Jimmy Choo Sandals. I love the bottom portion of this dress, it seems so light and I also really like the neckline. I wish it was a little more saturated in color and I wish she did a more messy up-do, but overall it’s really nice.
HATE – Nominee Michelle Williams in a short-sleeved embroidered white Chanel Haute Couture gown paired with Harry Winston diamond earrings and ring and Jimmy Choo pumps. I’ve seen her in this silhouette a million times it seems like and although this is fine, I just wish she’d take a bigger chance.
HATE – Florence Welch in a nude long-sleeved lace and tiers vintage-inspired Valentino Couture gown. I actually really like the tiers but the coloring and the upper-portion just wash her out. (I really dug her orange stunner of a dress she wore to perform much better)
ALL HOST ANNE HATHAWAY
LOVE – Anne Hathaway’s red carpet dress was a red hot vintage strapless Valentino Haute Couture taffeta gown with floral appliqué train, paired with Tiffany & Co. diamonds and matching scarlet lips. It was one of my favorite looks from her of the night.
LOVE – Anne Hathaway in a strapless (scalloped sweetheart neckline), beaded crimson Atelier Versace gown paired with Tiffany & Co. diamond earrings, bracelet and ring as well as an asymmetric up-do. She later wore this dress to the after parties. I love the intricate beaded detail and the deep color.
LOVE – Anne Hathaway in a strapless crystal-embroidered white Givenchy Haute Couture bustier dress and Tiffany & Co. diamond earrings, ring and archive bracelet to start the show. The detailing was incredible and she looked great in white.
LIKE – Anne Hathaway in a one-shoulder golden, beaded and fringed Oscar de la Renta gown paired with Tiffany & Co. diamond jewelry. This dress was beautifully cut and totally fun. “There are many cool things about this job. One of them is getting to wear a dress that does this” she joked as she shimmied to show off the beaded fringe.
LIKE – Anne Hathaway in a Lanvin black satin shawl collared tuxedo with jeweled button, custom Swarovski crystal-studded Brian Atwood pumps and Tiffany & Co. jewelry. I love that she donned a tux and belted out a musical number.
HATE – Anne Hathaway in a tiered, appliquéd gray-and-black gown paired with a diamond and amethyst necklace, diamond earrings and a yellow sapphire and diamond ring (all from Tiffany & Co.) For me, it looked too old-fashioned compared to her other looks.
HATE – Anne Hathaway in an off-the-shoulder futuristic blue sheen Giorgio Armani Prive gown paired with Tiffany & Co. jewelry and a straighter hair-do. For me I think the color was too saturated for Anne’s skin tone, and the sheen with the silhouette was too much for me.
HATE – Anne Hathaway in a high-necked, long-sleeved beaded lace Tom Ford gown with silver sandals and Tiffany & Co. jewelry to introduce the NYC PS22 chorus singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. It just didn’t do it for me.
