American Idol Two Go Home

American Idol 10 (Wednesdays & Thursdays at 8PM on FOX)

We all knew that 2 contestants were going home by the end of the night and I was crossing my fingers that it was 2 of the people I thought. I was right. BUT I'm getting ahead of myself.

Instead of a Group Number, tonight we got mini-groupings, and I must say I liked them much better, although they did seem under-rehearsed. We also got AI-Alum/Winner Fantasia singing her newest single "Collard Greens and Corn Bread" (That's really the song title!)

We also got the Ford Music Video (that I totally fast-forwarded through) and a montage clip of the contestants leaving the big mansion due to leaking ceilings, not a pesky ghost like some places are reporting.

First mini-group was Lauren Alaina and Scott McCreery. They sang Randy Travis' "I Told You So". I thought this was the best mini-group of the night; it was simple and understated and I thought they had the best harmonies.

They then got their results....

LAUREN is SAFE!
SCOTT is SAFE!

No real surprise there. Next up was the mini-group of Naima Adedapo and Jacob Lusk singing "Solid". And they were not as cohesive as the country duo before them.

Then they got their results...

JACOB is SAFE!
NAIMA is in the BOTTOM 3!

Again, not surprising. I think Naima would have pulled it out if her reggae idea was better executed, but it wasn't. She's the first on the Stools of Doom

Then came AI Alum/Winner Fantasia Barrino. I think her season was the only season I didn't really watch religiously. I liked the title of the song, but I was too worried she was going to have a wardrobe malfunction with the height of her slit that I couldn't focus on the vocals. But I think she gave the contestants great advice when she said don't surround yourself with "yes people" and remember that you love music.

Then we had a trio mini-group of Pia Toscano, Haley Reinhart and Thia Megia singing Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream". Haley got the first verse, Pia the second and Thia just had to try and harmonize the chorus, which I found quite the bit of foreshadowing. I'm not quite sure this flux behind Haley, she's just not my cup of tea, but I thought Pia showed a taste of what she can do up-tempo, and I dug it.

Then they got their results...

PIA is SAFE!

Then Seacrest told Haley and Thia that one is safe, the other is in trouble.

HALEY is SAFE!
THIA is in the BOTTOM 3!

This again, wasn't a surprise. Although I would have loved to see Haley in the Bottom, she didn't deserve it this week over Thia. Thia has been struggling since hitting the big stage trying to find herself as an artist.

Then we got the AI-Season 10 boy-band of James Durbin (guitar), Paul McDonald (guitar), Casey Abrams (bass) and Stefano Langone (keyboards) as they sang the Wings' "Band on the Run". I thought this was mostly a mess, but at least they looked like they were having fun up there.

Then they got their results.

CASEY is SAFE!
JAMES is SAFE!

So it was down to Paul vs. Stefano and one would be in the Bottom 3.

I wasn't surprised with this, I think either Stefano OR Paul could have been in the Bottom 3 and I would have been fine with it. I'm over both of them. I usually can't understand Paul when he sings and I don't think Stefano understands the lyrics he sings.

Then we got some Jaime Foxx and Will.I.Am and their cruise-ready performance of "Hot Wings" for the animated movie Rio. This was awful and awkward and awful. Yes, I said awful twice. It WAS that bad.

So 2 out of the Bottom 3 are going home, only 1 is safe.

PAUL is SAFE!

That means...

NAIMA and THIA are ELIMINATED.

I had them as my # 9 and # 11 in the ranking. I just didn't think Thia was ready for this competition quite yet: she's got to learn who she wants to be as an artist. As far as Naima is concerned I think she's entertaining and she took risks, just not all of them paid off and this season is very competitive vocally. I wish them both luck in the future.

Til next week folks!
