AddictiveMovie: The Goonies
The Goonies, is a 1985 adventure-comedy film directed by Richard Donner. The screenplay was written by Chris Columbus, story by executive producer Steven Spielberg.
Plot: A band of kids from the "Goon Docks" neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon, hoping to save their homes from demolition, go on an adventure to find the buried treasure of One-Eyed Willy, a legendary 17th-century pirate.
Reasons why I find this movie so addictive (I've seen it so many times, I've lost count!). . .
1. I'd want to be a "Goonie". The cast of characters in this movie are so great, I wish I had friends like them.
Mikey: (Sean Astin of recent Hobbit fame) Is the young leader of the group, determined to help save the Goon Docks.
Mouth: (Corey Feldman, what 80's movie is complete without him, really?) is the smart-mouthed (hence the nickname) friend, who's talking usually gets the Goonies into trouble (especially against bad guys Troy and the Fratellis').
Brandon: (Josh Brolin, seriously!) is Mikey's older brother who is sent out to bring Mikey and the other Goonies back from their quest, but ends up wanting to find the treasure just as much as the others. He's the big 'eye candy' for the teen girls watching. . .
Andy: (Kerri Green) Is the popular cheerleader who begins a romantic relationship with Brandon, while dumping her boyfriend Troy along the way. Definitely the 'eye candy' for the teen boys watching. . .(I always wanted to be her, I could make out with Brand and wear a short skirt, BUT still go on the adventure!)
Stef: (Martha Plimpton) is Andy's best friend, and is the girl-version of Mouth (hence the bickering/crushes between the two of them).
The Fratelli's (Anne Ramsey, Joe Pantoliano and Rober Davi): The 'bad guys'. The Goonies stumble upon their hideout and escape through the fireplace/tunnel. BUT the Fratellis' capture Chunk and find out there's buried treasure and follow after the Goonies.
NOW my 3 Favs:
Data: (Jonathan Ke Quan) is the extremely intelligent and inventive friend that idolizes James bond and has invented many gadgets similar to Inspector Gadget. (I think he's one of the funniest characters in the movie)
Chunk: (Jeff Cohen) is the fat, clumsy, food-loving, sensational story telling friend of the group. (By far the most memorable and quotable character of the movie, I dare you to find one person that grew up in the 80's that doesn't know the 'Truffle Shuffle'!)
Sloth: (John Matuszak) Is the large and deformed Fratelli brother of immense strength, held as a prisoner in a room by the other Fratelli's. He befriends Chunk while the chase after all the others (Their friendship is the heart of the movie!)
2. The adventure story!
What kid wouldn't want to find some pirate treasure map, roam around tunnels and caves, escaping boobie-traps and harden criminals, find a treasure-laden pirate ship and save their neighborhood from the hands of the evil country club that wants to turn it into a golf course!?!? I mean seriously what kid wouldn't want to do that!?!?
I strongly suggest if your in the mood for an 1980's movie full of adventure, whimsy and friendship YOU MUST watch The Goonies. If you haven't watched it since you were 10, go and rent it, download it, find it on Netflix. . .It's a classic in my eyes.
