Addictee: Golden Globes Fashion Police
Hey Everyone!! Here's a special edition of my Fashion Police, featuring the 2011 Golden Globes Best and Worst dressed actresses. So without further ado, let's get started.
I think I'm in the majority, when I say the green gowns last night really stood out as the best. So let's look at those first.
GREEN RULES
LOVE - Catherine Zeta-Jones in a strapless forest green Monique Lhuillier textured ballgown, Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry along with Ferragamo shoes and clutch. This was my favorite dress of the night. The fabric was so unique, the color was amazing and she looked like royalty to me, while she supported her recovery husband, Michael Douglas in his nomination.
LOVE - Nominee Mila Kunis in a dark green one-shoulder draped Vera Wang gown, paired with a Judith Leiber clutch and Lorainne Schwartz gold jewelry. This was another one of my absolute favorites of the night. The bodice is to die fore, and the wrinkled texture is both interesting and elegant.
LIKE – Nominee Angelina Jolie in a long sleeved, glittering emerald Atelier Versace gown paired with Robert Procop jewelry. I think the color is gorgeous, especially on Angelina who tends to opt for a black or neutral hue. Plus the silhouette makes her appear statuesque, yet unbelievably comfortable.
LIKE- Nominee Elisabeth Moss in a strapless deep green silk Donna Karan dress with intricate pleating on the bodice. The color is perfect for her and I really like the fluidity of the skirt.
REDS, PINKS AND ORANGES
LOVE – Golden Globe Winner Claire Danes in a custom Calvin Klein neon pink silk halter dress with gold box clutch, Roger Vivier sandals and Fred Leighton jewels. This dress, on her body, is perfect. I love the simple triangle pleat of the top, the cinched waist and the column skirt.
LOVE – Nominee Emma Stone in a peachy minimalist open-backed Calvin Klein dress, sleek clutch with Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry and Ferragamo peep-toes. I personally thought she looked absolutely amazing. The simple silhouette showed off her slim figure with a hint of sexiness with the back; it paired great with her new blonde ‘do and god accessories. Really well done.
LOVE – Nominee Sofia Vergara in a low-cut, red/deep pink Vera Wang gown with black belt, David Webb jewelry and loose waves. This dress is the perfect silhouette for Sofia; it shows off her amazing curves without going too far and the color is fabulous on her.
LOVE - January Jones in a red hot plunging neckline, and midriff baring fringed Versace gown paired with a soft retro ‘do and Neil Lane jewels. All heads turned when she walkd the carpet I’m sure. This dress is one of the hottest of the carpet, but yet seems completely appropriate. How did she do that?
LIKE – Nominee Kyra Sedgwick in a plunging ruffled neckline and chiffon flowing skirted orange Emilio Pucci gown, paired with a VBH clutch, Casadei sandals and chunky gold and diamond Ofira jewelry. I like the unique color and the flow of the dress, but it seems to be a bit big on her, no?
LIKE – Presenter Megan Fox in a pale pink Armani Prive gown with Swarovski crystal-embroidered strap, Roger Vivier clutch, Lorraine Schwartz jewelry and nude Brian Atwood peep-toes. The dress is understated for Megan’s usual siren style, but I think the bodice is unique and the dress was a good pick for the Globes.
LIKE - Christina Hendricks in a red one-shoulder gown by Romona Keveza and for the first time, I think she got everything right. I really like the color with her red hair, I think the shoulder ruffle was just enough detail, and the silhouette showed off her curves without having them be the sole focus. Lovely.
LIKE - Vanessa Williams in a one-shoulder sparkling pale pink column gown paired with large chandelier earrings. She's been looking a bit frumpy to me lately on the carpet, but I can't say that about this dress, I think she looks great in it.
HATE – Golden Globe Winner Natalie Portman in a strapless pink gown with red rose appliqué Viktor & Rolf gown and red Stella McCartney heels, Tiffany & Co. jewelry and a Dior clutch. I know people were talking about this dress, but for me it looked like a nightgown.
HATE – Presenter Sandra Bullock in a sparkling pink Jenny Packham goddess gown with jeweled embroidery, Jimmy Choo heels and a metallic VBH clutch. This dress for me is the wrong color for Sandra, it looks weighed down on her body and the hair and make-up are far too severe in my opinion.
HATE - Nominee Edie Falco in a one-shoulder red gown. She usually does simple frocks really well, but I think this one was too simple, too loose and too bright for her.
HATE – Nominee Lea Michele in a pink one shoulder Oscar de la Renta gown with ruffled details, accessorized with Christian Louboutin heels and Lorraine Schwartz platinum jewelry. Now I love Lea, and I love pink on Lea. But for me she's done this silhouette too many times lately, and it’s too “bubble gum” in my opinion.
HATE – Nominee Julianna Margulies in a strapless black and pink vintage Yves Saint Laurent gown, black pumps and over $850,000 of Cartier diamonds. For me, the neckline is too low and doesn’t accentuate her body as much as it could have.
HATE – Nominee Julianne Moore in a one-sleeve bright pink Lanvin gown, paired with nude pumps, Bulgari jewelry and a vintage clutch. For me, this avant-garde look is too much; the full sleeve in particular. I think if it was cut off at the elbow, I might have liked it more.
HATE - Heidi Klum in a draped, striped halter dress, sexy red platform sandals and Lorraine Schwartz diamond and wood bangles. For me, the color combination doesn’t work for this event, and it looks far too casual.
GO FOR THE NUDE
LOVE - Nominee Carrie Underwood in a strapless sequined nude Badgley Mischka gown, a Swarovski clutch, Brian Atwood heels and a sleek chignon. The simplicity of this dress paired with the sparkle really works for her, especially for the Globes.
LOVE - Dianna Agron in a strapless nude J.Mendel gown paired with a retro hairstyle and loads of diamond jewelry. I love the textured draping of the bodice and skirt and I think she looks completely elegant.
LOVE - Julie Bowen in a dusty nude one-shoulder Maz Azria Atelier dress, Mikimoto pearls, Charles David shoes and Swarovski clutch. I really love the vertical stripe effect of the fabric and the distressed ruffles; it fits her perfectly too.
LIKE – Nominee Nicole Kidman in a cream one-shoulder Prada sequined gown, paired with Fred Leighton jewels and Roger Vivier sandals. I think this is a stunning sleek silhouette on Nicole, the cream color works especially with just the hint of sparkle.
LIKE – Presenter Scarlett Johansson in a nude vintage, sleeved Elie Saab gown with floral appliqués, Jimmy Choo heels and Van Cleef & Arpels jewels including brooches worn as hair-clips. I think Scarlett does vintage justice, and this gown is beautiful. I just wish she punched it up a notch.
LIKE - Heather Morris in a sleek and sparkling neutral Lorena Sarbu gown accented with Diamond in the Rough drop earrings and asymmetric locks. I love the draped neckline and the silhouette shows off her dancer's body.
LIKE - Presenter Kaley Cuoco in a cream strapless and tiered gown by Catherine Kidd paired with Chopard jewelry (including a fake-out engagement ring). I think the tiers are really well done and pretty.
LIKE - Presenter Haylee Steinfeld in a white textured halter evening gown by Prabal Gurung paired with a turquoise tubular clutch and ponytail. As a first timer, I think she looks both age and event appropriate.
LIKE - Sarah Hyland a dark champagne vintage strapless Max Azria Atelier gown, with lace bodice paired with a Mikimoto necklace, Charles David heels, and a Daniel Swarovski clutch. I think she's really coming into her own, style-wise, and I look forward to how she progresses this year.
HATE - Leighton Meester in this nude, sheer sleeved and front slit Burberry Prorsum dress paired with studded strap platforms. I like that Leighton takes chances, and this almost works for me… but then it doesn’t.
HATE - Nominee Michelle Williams in a nude flower-embellished Valentino gown, paired with Christian Louboutin heels and Fred Leighton jewelry. For me, the fit was off and the style of the dress was fair too young and casual for the event.
HATE - Helen Mirren in this gold frock paired with a $6million dollar diamond necklace. I've seen Helen Mirren look so much better than this matronly dress, that I was sorely disappointed.
BLACK TIE AFFAIR
LOVE - Golden Globe Winner Jane Lynch in a graphite black silk/Lurex evening gown, embellished with feathers, and a beaded necklace by Ali Rahimi for Mon Atelier. I think this silhouette is perfect for her, the dress seemed light and fit her perfectly. (*Pictured with wife)
LOVE - Julianne Hough in a black column Marchesa gown with bold statement-making gold collar paired with a gold box clutch. I really like the silhouette on her, and I think the gold really pops with her blonde hair.
LIKE – Presenter Eva Longoria in a plunging neckline, body-hugging black Zac Posen dress with dramatic cut-out back, Sergio Rossi clutch and Neil Lane diamonds. If she wanted to show that she hot and back on the market, consider that accomplished.
LIKE - Nominee Christina Aguilera in a lace and jet beaded Zuhair Murad strapless dress and Lorraine Schwartz blackened platinum jewels. I think this dress fits her really nicely, and she simplified her hair and make-up to really let the dress do the talking; it really works.
LIKE – Nominee Jennifer Lawrence in a ruffled and corseted Louis Vuitton gown, Chopard 23-carat emerald earrings, Roger Vivier heels and a Judith Leiber clutch. For a newbie to the carpet, I think she did a great job. The dress is young and hip looking, but still appropriate for the ceremony.
LIKE - Golden Globe Winner Melissa Leo in a cap-sleeved, square neckline sparkling black gown by Marc Bouwer. I think it draped wonderfully on her body and was elegant.
LIKE - Jessalyn Gilsig in a black strapless textured gown by David Meister paired with pink jewelry. I think she has a great body for clothes and always shows it off beautifully.
LIKE - Nominee Julia Stiles in a dramatic one-shoulder black ball-gown paired with a large cocktail ring and retro curls. I think the dress was a great statement dress and she nailed the make-up, but I wish she did something sleeker.
LIKE – Nominee Piper Perabo in a bowed shoulder black Oscar de la Renta gown paired with a box clutch and bright red lips for her first bout on the red carpet. I think she played it safe, but she looked great.
HATE – Nominee Halle Berry in a corseted black Nina Ricci mini-dress with sheer overlay train paired with simple sandals and Harry Winston bracelets. Now don’t get me wrong, Halle looks absolutely amazing in this, however I don’t think it’s appropriate for this award ceremony, and think she could have classed it up a bit.
HATE - Presenter Jane Fonda in a sheer sleeved, sharp-shouldered black George Hobeika dress, embellished with gold and silver sequins. For me the sharp shoulders and the sheer/embellished sleeves really date the dress.
HATE - Jayma Mays a plunging black Alberta Ferretti gown, retro finger waves and bright orange lips. For me, this looks a bit too much like Morticia Addams.
THINGS THAT SPARKLE
LOVE – Nominee Anne Hathaway in a long sleeved, open-backed amber Armani Prive gown embroidered with Swarovski crystals, Roger Vivier clutch, Brian Atwood platforms and Van Cleef & Arpels vintage jewelry. Her body looks amazing in this, I loved the open back and I even kind of dug the shoulder pads… Go figure.
LOVE – Presenter Olivia Wilde in a strapless, frothy, embroidered chocolate brown Marchesa ball gown, Tiffany & Co. jewels and studded gold Christian Louboutin booties. She really stood out on the carpet in this very large skirted ball gown, but for me, it was because she absolutely pulled it off.
LOVE - Amber Riley in a one-shoulder sparkling purple gown, with a black belt by Oliver Tolentino, ring by Charles Albert, shoes by Midas, a black feather clutch by Michelle Monroe, and earrings Amber made herself! The fit of this dress is amazing, showing that plus-size can be fabulous.
LIKE – Presenter Jennifer Lopez in a white draped Zuhair Murad dress with a sexy front slit, a sheer crystal capelet and major Harry Winston bling, a Swarovski clutch and Christian Louboutin pumps. I think the capelet is different, and really upped what would have been a very simple white dress. I think she went a bit overboard in the makeup department, but overall I really like this look.
WHY SO BLUE?
LOVE – Nominee Amy Adams in a dark blue laser-cut, one shoulder Marchesa gown paired with Brian Atwood pumps, a Killian Hennessy clutch and Cartier diamonds. I love the color on Amy’s skin tone, and I think the laser-cut details are beautiful and well placed.
LIKE - Tina Fey in a navy velvet L’Wren Scott gown, Jimmy Choo heels, a Swarovski clutch and Lorraine Schwartz sapphire and diamond jewelry. The neckline and sleeve detail is absolutely gorgeous on Tina and the color is just about perfect on her too.
HATE – Mandy Moore in a blue tulle Monique Lhuillier ball-gown, Brian Atwood heels and 222 carats of Chopard jewelry. I actually really like the color on her, and the top portion of the gown. It’s the tulle skirt I don’t like. I wish it was form-fitting all the way down, or that the tulle had more detail.
LIKE - Jenny Ushkowitz strapless blue with tulle mini-teired full skirt, Rebecca Taylor dress. This could look a bit prom-like, but I think she stayed away because of the jeweled belt and her fabulous loose curls.
LIKE - Jane Krakowski is showing off her belly bump as well as some leg with this slate blue silk chiffon one-shoulder draped gown by Badgley Mischka Couture. She completed her look with Casadei shoes and a Salvatore Ferragamo light blue minaudière.
HATE - Jennifer Love Hewitt in this ice blue strapless Romona Keveza gown with architectural neckline and pearl accented waistline paired with a pale silver clutch and a high bun hairdo. For me this "ice blue" was too white, and the gown looked to bridal.
WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?
HATE - Helena Bonham Carter in a one-shoulder black floral Vivienne Westwood tea-length dress paired with mismatched pumps and unruly curls. She just looks crazy.
HATE - Tilda Swinton in a white blouse/yellow skirted Jil Sander dress paired with pale pink pumps. This is fairly feminine for Tilda, but to me it looks pieced together and not done well.
HATE - Gabourey Sidibe in a purple printed maxi dress from Marc Bouwer paired with Martin Katz jewelry. For me, this is far too casual for the event and instead of trying to embrace her curves, she covers them up.
I think I'm in the majority, when I say the green gowns last night really stood out as the best. So let's look at those first.
